STEP 14: Applying the Patina
Each patina artist has concocted his or her own array of patina recipes. These recipes include the reaction between bronze and a variety of metal salts when heat is applied. Each of these metal salts, which are usually nitrates, reacts to the heat with a different color. Different application techniques, such as dabbing or spraying, yield different results. For example, dabbing on the solution can give a marbled look, while spraying it on creates a more uniformed appearance. Huge advancements have been made just recently and foundries have become well known for their distinct patina recipes.
